Crime Rate Maps (NCR)
The Philippine National Police (PNP) do not typically release crime rates adjusted for population, but instead release them by crime volume. Crime rates adjusted for population are the international standard and are a more useful indicator of crime risk (otherwise, the geographic areas with the smallest population appear to have the lowest risk of crime). For key crime statistics linked to personal safety, PSA takes PNP reported crime volume and calculates a crime rate adjusted for population. This is the basis for the maps below.
Functionally, the definition of homicide in the Philippines is equivalent to 2nd degree murder. The international standard for determining the homicide rate is based upon a combination of murder (1st and 2nd degree) and manslaughter. Therefore, PSA also calculates a “combined murder and homicide rate” to better reflect the international definition of homicide.
