PSA Consultancy recorded seven (7) kidnapping-related incidents involving sixteen (16) victims in June 2024. Four incidents were perpetrated by Kidnap-for-Ransom (KFR) and involved or demanded ransom payment worth over PHP 31.15 million (USD 533,993.50).
Of the sixteen kidnap victims reported during the period, eight were foreign victims – four of Chinese nationality, one Chinese American national, and one Malaysian national. PSA recorded one kidnapping incident targeting a Western national, a Chinese American victim, this month. Based on the recorded incidents, five incidents happened in Metro Manila (one each in Makati City, Pasay City, Pasig City, Quezon City, and Taguig City), while the other incidents occurred in the provinces of Bulacan and Camarines Sur.
Two kidnapping incidents resulted in the demise of the victims. One incident was a kidnap-robbery where the victim initially escaped but later succumbed to injuries. The second incident was a kidnap-for-ransom case that involved two medical device executives, one Chinese and one Chinese American. Analysts note that this specific incident involved the perpetrators using a business-related scam to lure the victims into the Philippines. The perpetrators posed as potential business partners by using the name of an established local company to feign legitimacy. Reports and available information suggest that this incident was likely perpetrated by a transnational Chinese organized crime group.
PSA recorded two successful rescue operations this month. The operations were in response to one personal dispute-related incident and one KFR incident. The victims were held by their captors for less than a day prior to their rescue.
