PSA Consultancy recorded six (6) kidnapping-related incidents involving six (6) victims in February 2024. Five incidents were personal dispute-related, while one was perpetrated by a Kidnap-For-Ransom group that involved an undisclosed amount of ransom.
Of the six (6) kidnap victims reported during the period, two were foreign victims of Chinese nationality. PSA recorded zero kidnapping incidents targeting Western nationals this month. Based on the recorded incidents, two abductions occurred within Metro Manila, while the other incidents took place in Cavite, Zambales, Davao del Sur, and Davao de Oro.
One kidnapping incident resulted in the demise of one victim. The incident involved an eight-year-old girl who was presumed abducted and was later found dead.
Two incidents in February 2024 targeted ethnic Chinese businessmen. One incident was an attempted abduction in Zambales perpetrated by Chinese suspects. The second incident was an abduction in Manila City. While the nationalities of the suspects were not disclosed, analysts note that abductions targeting ethnic Chinese victims in recent years have been usually traced back to fellow ethnic Chinese suspects. These kinds of abductions have persisted month to month since 2021. Some of these abductions are usually gambling or debt-related, but highly financially liquid victims have also been targeted in the past.
PSA recorded two successful rescue operations this month. The operations were in response to two personal dispute-related incidents. The victims were held by their captors for one to two days prior to their rescue.
