Senate Remands VP Duterte Impeachment Articles, Casting Shadow on Trial’s Future

In a surprising turn of events, the Senate acting as an impeachment court voted on June 11 to remand the Articles of Impeachment back to the House. The move was intended not to dismiss the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, but to ask the House to address the “constitutional infirmities” in the process.
It remains to be seen how the recent development will affect the timeline of the impeachment proceedings, of which the start of the trial is scheduled for July 30. It also remains to be seen how the Supreme Court will respond on the matter as it is tasked to decide on difficult political uncertainties enshrined in the law, including the Constitution.
