An unnamed Fortune 50 company reportedly paid a USD 75 Million ransom payment to a ransomware group known as Dark Angels earlier this year, marking the largest ransom payment ever made in ransomware attacks, according to Zscaler’s 2024 Ransomware Report. This incident was confirmed by blockchain analysis company Chainalysis in an X (formerly Twitter) post, surpassing the previous record of USD 40 million paid by insurance company CNA in 2021. Researchers note the implications of this ransom payment incident, suggesting that it may encourage other ransomware or cybercriminal groups to attempt similar attacks, thereby worsening the ransomware threat landscape.
