Marcos Administration Deploys Additional Police in Metro Manila Amid Concerns About Crime Perception

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced the deployment of more than 21,500 police personnel to boost police visibility in Metro Manila as part of the government’s efforts to curb criminality in the region. PSA notes that the recent move highlights the Marcos administration’s intention to address the public’s deteriorating safety and security situation in the Philippines, following recent petty crime reports from the Japanese and South Korean Embassies. Analysts further note that the issue has been widely politicized by supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who argue that the safety and security situation was “better” during the previous administration’s “iron fist approach” on crime.
