US Missile System to Stay on Indefinite Deployment in the Philippines Despite Chinese Protests

Reuters revealed last week that a US army missile system is indefinitely deployed to the Philippines, after it was first deployed in April of this year as a part of joint training exercises. The Typhon missile system is an intermediate range weapon missile system that is a part of the US Army’s “Multi Domain Task Force,” and is a part of a set of systems and concepts. Named after a figure in Greek mythology, the Typhon missile system can fire a range of munitions, including Tomahawk missiles with a range of 1,500, which would reach well into the Chinese mainland. However, perhaps more relevant for a potential defense of the Philippines, the system can fire the very capable SM-6 air defense missile, and without the Typhon, air defense systems in the Philippines lack the capability to fire very long-range air defense missiles.
