The Guadalupe bridge along EDSA, which connects Makati and Mandaluyong, will be closed for repairs by October 2025. Preliminary works for the planned rehabilitation could begin as early as December this year to January 2025.

The retrofitting or strengthening of the 60-year-old Guadalupe bridge is part of the infrastructural preparation for a potential big earthquake that could hit Metro Manila when the West Valley fault moves. According to MMDA Acting Chairperson Romando Artes, “it was already observed that it’s somewhat vulnerable to seismic activity, given its low capacity and the possibility of liquefaction occurring at the foundation of the Guadalupe bridge.”

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is expected to award the project by the end of this year. The plan is to construct a temporary bridge by January 2025, with completion anticipated by October 2025. The Guadalupe bridge will be then closed to traffic for up to 17 months during the retrofitting process, with the temporary bridge serving as a detour.

PSA notes that planned rehabilitation works of the Guadalupe bridge is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions. The bridge is one of the major thoroughfares connecting the southern and northern parts of Metro Manila. The closure will likely result in more traffic jams, slower commutes, and general inconvenience for motorists and commuters in the area.
